MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Railway crews continue to clear a train derailment in Manatee County just north of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.
Officials say crews planned to attempt to upright and remove one of two tanker cars filled with propane Thursday evening at the derailment site in the 7200 block of 16th Street East.
Temporary road closures of 15th Street East between Tallevast Road and Whitfield Avenue are planned. County officials urge motorists to seek alternate routes around the area while the work is being completed.
The incident occurred on Feb. 28 and left five railcars and two propane tankers derailed at the site.
Crews from Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue responded to the initial calls, and said there were no injuries or leakages reported.
Manatee County Emergency Medical Services and Sheriff’s Office personnel reported to the derailment scene along with Manatee County Public Safety personnel, who were standing by to assist with the clearing of the tracks.
“We are proud of our first responders,” said Manatee County Board of County Commissioners Chair Kevin Van Ostenbridge. “Their quick action has helped maintain the safety and security of our citizens.”
Crews will continue to monitor the situation as clean-up efforts begin.
