Steven Iori is one of many FEMA employees who can be found tabling at nearby Home Depots.

Iori says he has seen his fair share of devastation. Prior to working for FEMA, he worked in Iraq and Afghanistan for the State Department. He says seeing the hurt from hurricanes breaks his heart just like the warzones did.

"I hate to see them go through this every year, every other year. It breaks my heart to see all their personal effects laying in large piles," said Iori, a mitigation specialist with FEMA.

But now he's able to help prevent people from losing the things they love. You can find him out offering free hurricane mitigation advice to anyone needing some tips.

He hopes it goes a long way, especially after seeing families in Louisanna lose everything in back-to-back hurricanes.

"They just finished repairing their property, and they’re back at square one again," said Iori.

FEMA reccomends taking the time to put things like your water heater in your attic so it won't be inundated by flood water. Other things around the home should also be raised.

"The best thing you can do on your own is getting your air conditioning, heat pumps up off the ground," he said.

FEMA also reccomends installing gable end bracing for gable roofs, or strengthening connections with hurricane clips or straps.

"The roofs— we saw so many effected because their roof ridge vent flew off. It was the first one thing to go. And that’s an easy fix to just double and triple secure those items," said Iori.
