SANFORD, Fla. — Now that the Florida Department of Transportation has wrapped up work on I-4 Ultimate, the agency is targeting other spots along the busy interstate for improvements.

FDOT is looking to ease congestion on the I-4 ramps at County Road 46A in the Sanford area of Seminole County.

“Especially at five o'clock in the evening, cars can be backed up all the way back (onto I-4),” said Carlos Mitchell, owner of Superior Mobile Detailing.

Mitchell is based out of Sanford, but travels across Central Florida.

He said he uses the I-4 and CR-46A interchange frequently.

FDOT found 42,000 vehicles travel in this area of Sanford every day.

“We really need to do something about this because that could cause some accidents right there,” Mitchell said.

FDOT officials say the department is going to do something about it.

But the changes aren’t coming to the I-4 ramps, instead FDOT plans to add new turning lanes on nearby roadways CR-46A and Rinehart Road.

Increasing capacity there, should, according to FDOT, reduce congestion on the I-4 ramps.

“Anything to help the flow of traffic around here,” said Mitchell.

Construction on the $7.5 million project is expected to begin in the fall of 2023.
