ORLANDO, Fla. — A well-traveled street in Orlando’s College Park neighborhood is set to get a makeover.
The city of Orlando is teaming up with the Florida Department of Transportation to make safety improvements on Edgewater Drive.
“I feel like this is a cut-through street for some people," said Edgewater Drive business owner Jennifer Moon-Hudggett. "It’s pretty fast pace."
Officials with the city of Orlando say they are hoping to transform Edgewater Drive from Lakeview Street to Par Street as a Complete Streets Project. The improvements would include a roundabout at Lakeview Street to slow down drivers, wider sidewalks — in some spots double the width — to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and the removal of the traffic signal at Vassar Street to reduce backups.
“I’ve even seen someone get hit by a car — it was horrible,” said Moon-Huggett, who owns the New Moon Market.
The project also calls for the addition of mid-block crosswalks, refuge islands in the median, and landscaping changes to not only improve Edgewater Drive visually, but also to slow down drivers.
“I think it’s going to be a great positive thing for College Park,” Moon-Huggett said. “(It will) bring families out, make it a little slower for people to walk with their family and kids. I can see it with the moms and dads with the strollers, and the dog and not being afraid of getting run over.”
Once design is completed in late 2023, Orlando officials say the final construction cost for the multi-million dollar project will be determined.
Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2024.
