BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard County School District is looking for a new superintendent as certain school board members express their desire for a change in leadership. However, two of the school board members were not supportive of this decision.

District 3 Board Member Jennifer Jenkins was one of those against this conversation. She believes the board will not find a better person than Brevard County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins to serve in this position.

But not all agree.

“We have lost our way to some degree. We have lost our focus on what we are supposed to be doing and I believe that we are only as strong as our leaders are,” added District 1 Board Member Megan Wright.

That is what sparked the conversation surrounding Mullins's future with the district.

While two other school board members agreed with the District 1 board member about going in a different direction, two others, including Jenkins, were opposed to that idea.

“You will never find another man with the experience and the heart of the children of Brevard Public Schools more than Dr. Mullins,” explained Jenkins.

She said that under Mullins's leadership there has been an increase in parental satisfaction and student success.

However, board members seem to be moving forward with a change in leadership as the superintendent will be discussing a separation agreement with the board chair that will be mutually agreed upon and come back before the board.

Mullins said the community has not only played a major part in his life, but his family's life as well.

“This community has not only given me the opportunity to serve as an educator, to serve as a leader, but it has also contributed to raising my own children,” explained Mullins. “I have said very publicly that this community I consider partly responsible for the success my own children have today. Very proud of them, proud of what Brevard Public Schools has provided my own children.”

He said the foundation for an educational system is being able to work together as well as move forward and that is his main priority.
