Utica police say a video captured an incident when a 17-year-old high school senior stabbed an 18-year-old at Proctor High School.
The Utica City School District’s acting superintendent confirms the video was shared with many other people and eventually posted online. Nearby teachers were made aware of the fight in the hallway, separated the students, and disarmed the suspect.
“They walked to danger. And as far as I'm concerned, anybody who puts themself in a position like that is a hero," said Utica City School District acting superintendent Brian Nolan.
“We are very, very thankful for the staff, specifically the physical education staff, at Proctor High School who stopped this fight, disarmed the individual and separated the two parties, ensuring that no further violence occurred," said Sgt. Michael Curley with the Utica Police Department.
Police said the suspect was using a hunting-style knife, and there is still a question as to how the knife got inside the building, as the school buildings are equipped with new, multimillion dollar weapons detection systems.
“It's a highly technical matrix that can detect certain objects that it's been programed to detect. It doesn't really do a good job detecting knives," Nolan said. "And we have to take a look at our sensitivity that we have calibrated at.”
Nolan said they have increased that sensitivity, which they hope will help prevent incidents like this from happening again, and they are taking further steps as well.
“We increased the number of alarms that were set off from almost 50%, which then slowed the students' ability to enter the school because they then had to be wanded with a metal detector wand and they had to have their bags visually inspected," said Nolan.
His message to students is: if you see something, say something.
“This was totally preventable. If that student with the camera just said to the teacher, 'look, and something's going to go down here. It's with these two guys. I'm letting you know,' it would have been prevented," said Nolan.
Nolan said the student who is suspected of stabbing the victim is suspended, and so is the person who recorded the incident. Utica Police have an increased presence in and outside of the school.
Utica Police and the school district said students are also not allowed to exit the building during free periods and for lunch this week. That will be re-evaluated next week.
