DELTONA, Fla. — Three weeks after Hurricane Ian dropped historic levels of rain throughout the state, several lakes and ponds in Deltona are still overflowing.

The floods are keeping several roads closed and backyards filled with water.

What You Need To Know

  • Deltona is still flooded in some areas weeks after Hurricane Ian

  • Residents said the waters continued to rise for days afterward

  • The water is finally beginning to recede

“It was very nerve-racking to see it keep coming up day after day,” said local resident Rick Marrier.

He and his wife have called Deltona their home for the last 11 years — and much of the land behind their home now looks like a swamp.

“We had a kid’s swing up there. Grandkids played back there,” he said.

In the immediate days after the storm, Marrier says he had to get sandbags to ensure the water didn’t creep too far onto his property.

He saw water levels consistently rise for about 12 to 13 days. He even set up sticks to measure how high it got.

“Within the last few days, it’s finally going back,” explained Marrier.

The Public Works Division for the City of Deltona says they’re working on ways to relieve the water basins.

As for Marrier, he’s trying to remain patient while he waits for the water to go away and is thankful his family will likely avoid any significant property damage.

“I’m confident that will all recede back and that I’ll be able to use that area again,” pointed Marrier.
