  • Evans High School went on lockdown Thursday following social media threat

  • Students were released around two hours later

  • Authorities found no evidence of criminal activity, weapons

Authorities searched the campus and found no evidence of criminal activity nor any weapons, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. At no time was there an active shooter on campus.

Frightened students inside thought there was a shooter. They started texting and calling their parents to let them know. Dozens of parents anxiously waited outside the school for answers, some for close to two hours.

Simone Anderson, who left work early to come wait for her daughter, wishes authorities on scene and the district were more transparent with parents as the situation was unfolding.

“No one still came to the concerned parents to say, ‘Okay it’s an all clear, everything is okay now. You can now proceed, xyz.’ And that is sad.”

Anderson heard from Spectrum News that there was not an active shooter before she heard from the school or authorities at the scene.

“For me, being a parent, this was not easy,” she said. “It’s not something that any parent would like to face or see. Because honestly, I don’t know what I would’ve done if something happened to my baby.”

The lockdown began around an hour after Nikolas Cruz was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2018 Parkland school massacre.

Students were dismissed building by building after authorities gave the all clear, according to Orange County Public Schools.
