ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Volunteers hit the streets of Orlo Vista, coming to the aid of residents who have a long road of cleanup and recovery following Hurricane Ian. The water rose above waist deep in some areas, prompting many homes to need a complete clean out.

What You Need To Know

  • The efforts were headed by several groups and faith-based organizations

  • Orlo Vista was one of the hardest hit areas in Orange County during Hurricane Ian

  • Many homes will need to be gutted and completely cleared out due to flood water

Volunteers marched through the streets of Orlo Vista on Saturday to help residents like Dianne Scott. Scott sat outside in her chair directing crews on what items of hers could stay, and which ones had to go to the trash. Ultimately, most items fit into the latter category.

“Everything, everything... Because of the water damage, there’s mildew and I can’t keep it,” said Scott.

The smell of mildew and sewage permeated the neighborhood. Houses like Scott’s, which saw waist-deep water, are unlivable.

“We just got back in town this morning. We didn’t know it was this bad — I didn’t,” she said.

Scott’s house has a prominent line up to her front door handle, demonstrating exactly how high the flood water hit. It was enough to knock her fridge on its side, but also enough to bust volunteer crews into action.

“We need to help out in a time like now, because some of these people are elderly and they can’t do it by themselves,” said Sabrina Vinson, a volunteer and member of Majestic Life.

Victoria P. Siplin, District 6 Commissioner, and approximately 70 volunteers from Winter Park NJROTC E-CERT, Islamic Center of Orlando and Majestic Life Church were among those stepping in to help.

Scott is disabled and her motorized chair was washed over in the flood. Same with the new bed she finally just paid off, and the baby dolls she cherishes and collects.

This wasn’t her first flood, but she didn’t think anything could top Hurricane Irma.

“It’s not worth it. It’s not worth it losing every 5 years, you know?” said Scott.
