FLORIDA — In a crowded field of 10 Democratic candidates running for U.S. House District 10, Maxwell Frost came out as the winner and heads to the general election to face Republican Calvin Wimbish.

What You Need To Know

Frost, 25, was the youngest in the race, and if elected, he would become the first member of Generation Z to be elected to Congress.

District 10, which includes most of Orange County, is one of two congressional seats where there was no incumbent running for re-election.

The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Val Demings, who won her primary Tuesday night for U.S. Senate and will face Florida Senator Marco Rubio in November. This election is likely to make an impact in deciding which party controls the House after the 2022 midterms.

His two closest challengers in the Democratic field had much more experience holding public office. Florida state Senator Randolph Bracy has been serving in the Florida Legislature since 2012, and Alan Grayson had served Florida in Congress from 2009-2011 and again from 2013-17. He received endorsements from Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

Frost is a community organizer who led thousands of young activists in the March for Our Lives Movement to end gun violence. He also helped lead the American Civil Liberty Union’s fight to restore voting rights to convicted felons in Florida and often talks about his grandmother’s health struggles as he calls for more quality healthcare for everyone.

“At the end of the day, this message is about love — saying if you love somebody, you want them to have the health care they deserve," Frost said. "And it’s not about if you’re a Democrat or Republican, red or blue — it’s about the people versus the problem, and sitting down and figuring out how we’re going to solve the problem. That’s how we’re going to end gun violence, that’s how we’re going to make sure every person in this country has health care, and that’s how we’re going to move forward in the way we need to.”

District 10 includes a larger number of Democrats, but Frost said he’s not taking anything for granted in the general election as he takes on Wimbish.
