OCOEE, Fla. — A nonpartisan organization held a ‘Souls to the Polls’ event in Ocoee Saturday afternoon, aimed at increasing voter turnout in the Black and Brown communities.
About 25 people marched to a nearby polling station to cast their ballots for the upcoming primary on Aug. 23 after listening to neighborhood speakers and local candidates.
Community member Gary Stone owns Evolution Barber and Lounge, across from where the event took place.
Stone said he knows just how important it is to have a strong community around you and that events like this are beneficial for everyone.
“Anything positive that people can come together, have a good time — positive vibes and good energy — you can’t beat that, man,” he said.
Early voting in Orange County is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Aug. 21.
