ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying the people responsible for a shooting between the occupants of two vehicles in downtown Orlando that left a woman shot.

What You Need To Know

  • A dispute between the occupants of two vehicles led to a shooting in downtown Orlando

  • The woman who was shot in the leg is an innocent bystander, police say

  • Anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities

At around 1:21 a.m., two groups of people got into an argument at the corner of Central Boulevard and Court Avenue, Police Chief Orlando Rolón said during a press conference in downtown Orlando on Wednesday morning. The groups dispersed and got into two vehicles, and a gunfight ensued, he said.

A 40-year-old Hispanic woman was sitting at an outdoor table at an establishment when she was shot in the leg, Rolón said.

The woman, who was not involved in the shooting and was an innocent bystander, is in stable condition at a hospital, police said.

Rolón said that the police need help in finding the people responsible for the shooting.

"We do have some limited leads, but we need the help of the citizens who may have witnessed or know about this incident to report it to us," he said, urging people with any information about the shooting to call 800-423-TIPS (8477). "We do need the citizens' help in order to solve this one."

Orlando Police Lt. Det. Frank Chisari said authorities are pouring over a lot of videos from downtown and business surveillance cameras. It will take time to determine who was in the vehicles and give a suspect description to the public, he added.

He did say that with all the videos in the area, it is only a matter of time before the suspects are caught.

One downtown business owner is now working to expand their video surveillance system so they can better help police solve crimes and possibly deter incidents like this from happening in the first place.

“Having the cameras, whether they’re inside or outside, it really does make a difference for us because if at any point something does happen, we can always reflect back and see what it is that we need to keep an eye out on a little bit more,” said Tiffany Mcllveen, manager of The Robinson.

Mcllveen said part of what makes the coffee and cocktail shop so great is its location — downtown. But she said that also sometimes creates safety concerns. She said she welcomes opportunities to work with the Orlando police to ensure safety.

“I love this place, so with that said there’s always going to be concerns that we’re taking every step that we can to make sure that this is safe.  And sometimes we need the help on the outside, if it’s not just us on the inside taking those precautions," she said.

The owners of the shop say they’re meeting with Orlando Police later this week to see how they can better tie in their surveillance system with the police department’s.
