DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – On Monday, January 31, Bethune-Cookman University students said they were awakened by loud noises as Daytona Beach Police searched the campus following threats to their school.

“It was hectic this morning, everyone in the hallway was scared as they saw a whole bunch of police outside, undercovers, dogs. They were everywhere,” Samson Reed, a sophomore said. "Helicopters sounded like they were just outside the window.”

“It was early, waking up to phone calls, people letting us know what happened,” Tyrik Orr a freshman at the university said. “[My mom did] what any mom would do, check if her son was alright. My grandma and everybody made sure I was alright.”

Reed said when he looked at his phone he saw the university sent him an email that said to ‘stay in the room.’

“20 minutes go past, we learn it’s that kind of threat, so everyone is getting into shelter,” Reed said.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said just before 5:00 a.m., someone called law enforcement and identified themselves as part of a Neo-Nazi group. They then proceeded to tell the dispatcher that he planted bombs in duffel bags around the campus and also planned to shoot up the school.

“It is a Neo-Nazi organization called Atomwaffen. I don’t know if it’s connected to what happened in Orlando, but it does have affiliation.”

On Sunday, January 30, Atomwoffen held several Anti-Semitic demonstrations around the city of Orlando.

The threat made to Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach was one of several made nationwide targeting historically Black colleges and universities.

“I find it kind of prejudice, but it’s life. we just have to deal with it and learn how to change and be one,” Reed said.

Police Chief Young says the FBI is now taking over the investigation.

It’s the second threat to happen at the university since January 4.

Daytona Beach Police will continue to survey the campus for any threats to ensure the university is secure. A spokesperson for the university says classes will resume tomorrow.
