A new COVID-19 testing site at Camping World Stadium is already seeing long lines on its first day open. The other Orange County sites it was meant to alleviate still saw long waits to get tested.
“I’m almost an hour and a half over here,” said Henry Villegas as he drove past a sign at Barnett Park that said he still had 2 hours to go.
Villegas has been tested at the county's site before, but he said on those days, he never saw lines like Monday's.
After he started feeling symptoms yesterday, he said it was worth the wait to get a free test and know for sure whether he needs to isolate at his house.
“If I have COVID, I go home and stay there until this disappears,” Villegas said.
Yesterday, medical workers at Barnett Park administered more than 2,600 COVID-19 tests.
Orlando opened their new testing site at Camping World stadium Monday to help alleviate these three hour lines, but Monday there were long lines at both Barnett Park and Camping World Stadium.
Orlando city leaders reported more 3,000 tests administered at the new site on Monday.
Orange County leaders said it might be a while before we see any real impacts from the new larger testing site.
Villegas hopes this will be his last time getting a COVID-19 test at Barnett Park, but he think this virus will continue to spread rapidly unless people take the right precautions.
“If people don’t get vaccinated, and don’t get the test, we’ll never gonna finish with this. It’s just gonna get worse and worse and worse,” Villegas said.
Leaders say it remains to be seen whether the stadium site will help alleviate lines or if the demand is just that great here in Central Florida.
