Driving on Colonial Drive during the rush hour commute isn’t fun for drivers. But one viewer thinks he knows how to make that drive smoother.

- FDOT says it will review the timing of the signals, but warns an adjustment could have a ripple effect
John Pinto, who lives in the Avalon Park, area says he gets stuck at every right light on Colonial Drive, from Avalon Park Boulevard to Alafaya Trail.
“That light, and the light after that, and the light after that, and the light after that are just too short to clear the traffic that’s backed up this far,” Pinto said as Spectrum News 13 drove along Colonial Drive.
Pinto says this happens for both the morning and evening rush hour commutes.
“From light to light there is wall to wall cars,” he says. “There’s no space, no separation.”
Getting stuck at the lights can cost him an extra half hour to get to work.
“What’s normally a 15-minute ride to my office can take 45 minutes,” Pinto said.
Spectrum News 13 reached out to FDOT and a spokeswoman says staff recently made a few signal timing adjustments at the Colonial Drive and Avalon Park intersection to improve eastbound left turns.
“Each small timing adjustment — down to the second — can have a ripple effect to other sections of roadway and crosswalks, which is why our engineers thoroughly review these changes,” said FDOT Public Information Director Jessica Ottaviano.
But FDOT promises to review this stretch of Colonial Drive to see if additional timing adjustments can be made.
“It just doesn’t make any sense when a simple tweak to the timing of the lights, those problems would go away,” Pinto said.
