Getting stuck in traffic is a daily problem for Michael Megill when he wants to get home to Davenport.

“I think it’s the worst traffic in all of Orlando,” he said.

  • FDOT plans to improve traffic flow in the area are years away

  • Officials say they hope new lanes near ChampionsGate will help congestion near World Drive

Megill works as an aircraft mechanic at Orlando International Airport.

He says some of the worst backups happen on I-4 west near World Drive and State Road 417 in Osceola County.

“We think about moving further and further away,” he said.

It’s frustrating, he said, especially after a long day of work.

“I got 12 more years, 13 more years until retirement, so I might have to move," Megill said. "But I look at the map, and there aren’t many options."

He says the Florida Department of Transportation needs to make improvements as soon as possible.

“You’re just losing lanes constantly right here,” he said. “It should be five or six lanes and keep it five or six lanes.”

But unfortunately, improvements to reduce congestion, like the I-4 Beyond the Ultimate project, aren’t happening on I-4 near World Drive any time soon.

But an FDOT spokesperson said work going on nearby will help Megill and other drivers.

Construction started last month to add a lane to both I-4 west and east between State Road 429 and Champions Gate Boulevard. While that’s 2 miles south of World Drive, FDOT officials say they believe those extra lanes will help some of the backups that Megill endures daily.

“I would rather spend more time at home doing my house chores and being with my family than sitting in I-4 traffic,” said Megill.
