OVIEDO, Fla. — On Tuesday, Oviedo voters will decide who will serve the city as mayor for the next two years.

On the ballot is incumbent Mayor Megan Sladek. Oviedo Mall Development Director Kevin Hipes and middle school civics teacher Abraham Lopez are also vying for the top spot.

In the past few months, each candidate has been door-knocking and trying to gather support.

As the city continues to grow, with roads clogging up with cars daily, candidates are taking the traffic issue seriously.

A major issue at the top of each candidate’s list is handling Oviedo's growth and development.

Sladek hopes to continue the mobility plan process the city is working on, to try and figure out how to get people around better.

She hopes people will choose other forms of transportation.

“About 19% of car-based trips in Oviedo are less than 2 miles," Sladek said.

Hipes is working on turning the mall into a mixed-use space with apartments, a hotel and more.

If elected mayor, he wants to move the future growth to this area.

“That’ll create traffic internal flow and these folks will probably hop right on 417 and go here, creates no traffic on Mitchell Hammock," Hipes said.

He shared that message while knocking on doors in his neighborhood.

“I can negotiate with developers, sit on the city side of the table, make sure that the city gets a fair deal," Hipes said.

Lopez, a 7th grade civics teacher, joined his family at a meet-and-greet in his neighborhood.

He plans to bring his past political experience in New Jersey to help control growth in Oviedo.

“We’re not going to use city funds for this, we need our county and we need our state to commit the funding to improve our traffic flow," Lopez said.

Polls open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Election Day polling locations are City Hall, Riverside Park and the Live Oak Community Building.
