“They keep building, taking out the small houses and putting in the condos,” Lisa Palm says. It's filling up.”
With that growth comes traffic.
“We refer to this as Dead Man's Curve because it's so dangerous,” Palm says, referring to State Road A1A near International Drive and North Atlantic Avenue.
It’s not only dangerous for drivers.
A recent Cape Canaveral Community Survey found four out of five residents don’t feel safe biking or walking along A1A.
The city is partnering with the Florida Department of Transportation to improve the area, hoping to slow down drivers with a roundabout. The change will also realign International Drive to connect to A1A at North Atlantic Avenue.
“Not only does it lessen the severity of crashes, it can still keep very efficient traffic moving,” FDOT spokesperson Jessica Ottaviano says.
The state also plans to reconstruct A1A from Long Point Road to George King Boulevard to make it safer for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. A raised, grass median, along with a separated track for bicycles, and an upgraded sidewalk are proposed.
The cost of design, right of way acquisition and construction for the new roundabout totals more than $17 million.
Construction won’t begin soon, though. The start date listed is early 2026.
