OVIEDO, Fla. — The Oviedo Mayoral election is just two weeks away on Nov. 2.

What You Need To Know

Mayor Megan Sladek is running for re-election and is hoping to serve the city for another two years.

She has knocked on thousands of doors over the last few months.

“Trying to reach anybody who is registered to vote, who has shown any interest in voting in Oviedo the last couple of years," Sladek said.

She rides her bike around town as much as possible.

“About 19% of car-based trips in Oviedo are less than two miles," Sladek said.

Sladek said there is more work to be done before people are more comfortable getting around other ways.

“Check this wall out, there was no sidewalk here for the longest time. So you’d be coming down, and where do you go, there’s no connectivity. But we’ve now connected this sidewalk, so you can safely navigate the roundabout," she said while showing Spectrum News 13 the roundabout near downtown Oviedo.

The city is doing a mobility plan to try and solve the big problem: Traffic. This plan will help figure out how to get people around Oviedo more efficiently and not just with cars.

This also includes near Oviedo on the Park where some sites have long been zoned for development.

“We don't have any good plan for how we're going to address traffic on Mitchell Hammock, yet. We have a lot of good ideas in the works, and we need to implement them before we go adding any more density than what’s already legally allowed to be here," she said.

Sladek worked to keep a portion of that land zoned agriculture.

She is hoping to be re-elected to keep building on the momentum, like helping pay down about $7 million in municipal debt during her term.

"No one else can do as good a job coming up with a plan that will make us want to live here 30 years from now," she said.
