After years of declining honeybee populations across the United States, Dennis Langlois, a beekeeper in Central Florida, says even though things are looking up, the work doesn't stop here.
What You Need To Know
- Back in 2006, experts saw a significant decline in the honeybee population due to colony collapse disorder
- It's now been several years since CCD has been reported, and the honeybee population has improved dramatically
- There are currently about 2.8 million honey bee hives in the U.S. today
His farm, the Black Hammock Bee Farms, recently opened to the public, and that’s where he’s dedicated to rebuilding and restoring honey bee colonies.
His work involves going into homes infested with a bees nest, and removing it as carefully as possible.
On that front, he says the biggest thing he wants people to know is to NOT try to get rid of bees yourself.
"If she (the homeowner) was successful at exterminating these bees here, all this stuff right here would be stuck in the wall," said Langlois.
Once that's done, he take the bees back to his farm to rebuild their colony.
Langlois's work plays an important role.
Back in 2006, experts saw a significant decline in the honeybee population due to colony collapse disorder.
It's now been several years since CCD has been reported, and the honeybee population has improved dramatically.
But Langlois says it's important to keep things moving in the right direction.
"It's the younger kids that are going to come up with the solution. So the earlier we can teach kids about bees, the sooner we can get them interested in helping out some of the challenges that bees are having," he said. "My favorite part about everything is teaching kids about bees. I really really love to talk to kids about bees. They have so many awesome questions."
According to the University of Florida, there are currently more than 4,000 beekeepers in the state of Florida managing about 500,000 honey bee colonies.
A decade ago, there was an all time low of 650 beekeepers representing 150,000 colonies.
There are currently about 2.8 million honey bee hives in the U.S. today.
