ORLANDO, Fla. — It’s been almost one month since a fire decimated the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando's shelter and clinic. In that time, the nonprofit has raised more than $1 million and collected enough pet food, kitty litter and other supplies to fill storage rooms.

Cathy Rodgers, Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando’s head of philanthropy and marketing, said the nonprofit hit the $1 million at the beginning of October.
She said the support from the community has been overwhelming.
“Typically in a normal fundraising year — our operational fundraising — we raise about $2 million," Rodgers said. "So to raise 50% of that in a matter of (weeks) is astounding and amazing, and just shows how much the community really cares about this organization.”
Rodgers said the Pet Alliance is looking for temporary office and shelter space in the Orlando area and officials are hoping to finalize the locations this week.
Meanwhile a few of the Orlando-based volunteers, including “bark buddy” Josh Davidson, are now volunteering at the nonprofit’s Sanford location.
Davidson is happy to be helping out again and relieved the fire didn’t prove even more devastating. According to the Pet Alliance, 45 cats and 26 dogs were rescued, and 17 cats died of smoke inhalation.
“Knowing the facility so well, it just blew my mind seeing how close the fire got to where the dogs were,” Davidson said.
