ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — College students living at the Arden Villas apartment complex have started an online petition and created a list of safety demands for the property management company, in light of former worker and fellow tenant Miya Marcano’s disappearance and what is expected to be the confirmation of her death soon.

As of Monday evening, the petition has received more than 18,400 signatures.
“We didn’t get a chance to know Miya personally because we were robbed of that chance, but she was one of us,” said Brenna Boylan, one of the petition organizers. “She was a friend, she was a sister, she was a daughter, but most importantly, she was a person, and every person deserves the right to feel safe in their own homes.”
Searchers found a body Saturday near the Tymber Skan on the Lake Condominiums in Orlando that Orange County Sheriff John Mina said is believed to be Marcano’s. Authorities are waiting for the medical examiner to confirm or deny the identification, Mina said. He confirmed that a purse with Marcano’s identification was also found by the body but said the two cell phones or keys related to the case were not with the purse.
Marcano, 19, worked and lived at the Arden Villas apartments near UCF. She was last seen on Friday, Sept. 24. Investigators said they believe 27-year-old Armando Caballero, a maintenance worker who had made unwanted advances toward Marcano, entered her apartment with a master key. Caballero was found dead from an apparent suicide at his own apartment complex a few days later.
The petitioners’ safety demands include enacting new security measures, such as having a security officer at the gate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and for rent from the beginning of the 2021-to-2022 lease term to be returned to residents.
