ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A group from the Leadership with a Purpose program has created a shopping list guide to help people build a hurricane kit without breaking the bank.

What You Need To Know

  • A group of Hurricane Maria survivors has built a hurricane kit list

  • Information is available in English and Spanish

  • Items on the list will cost shoppers about $280 total

  • Details about where to get the items at the lowest prices are included

The group’s bilingual guide shows shoppers where they can find the lowest-priced items to save money but still build a hurricane kit with all the essentials.

“When I prepare this kit, I’m thinking of the food, the medication for the kids and elderly persons,” Zayleen Santos said.

“In total, shoppers will spend about $280 to build a hurricane kit with all the essentials if they follow the guide,” Carmen Rodriguez said.

Without the guide, the women estimate the costs would be almost twice as much.

“The guide we created is for anyone, no matter their financial situation,” Rodriguez said. “We just want to help them get through a disaster.”

They both understand how important it is to have a hurricane kit ready. That’s why they made an English and a Spanish version of the guide.

“I used my experience from surviving Hurricane Maria and my time with the Red Cross to construct this kit,” Rodriguez said.

Like Rodriguez, Santos is also a Hurricane Maria survivor. She volunteered at the Red Cross to help other survivors as well.

“We need to prepare for all things,” Santos said.

Leadership with a Purpose is a program that helps Hurricane Maria survivors develop career skills.
