RALEIGH N.C. – A good Samaritan’s instincts saved the lives of four kittens, who are now looking for their forever homes.
Chuck Campbell, 85, of Wake Forest was driving when he noticed a bag on the side of the road. Campbell stopped to investigate, discovering five newborn kittens trapped inside a sealed bag.
Campbell called the SPCA of Wake County, who immediately took the 2-week-old kittens, who were starving and dehydrated, into their urgent care.
“We brought them in here, and we’ve had them in here in foster care for the past four weeks. They’ve been getting around-the-clock neonatal care,” Samantha Ranlet, of the SPCA of Wake County said.
Unfortunately, one of the kittens did not make it.
“We did everything we could for him, but it seemed like his poor little body could not take the trauma,” Ranlet said.
The remaining four kittens, Raven, Crow, Magpie and Jackdaw are happy and healthy, and they will be ready for adoption in two weeks.
Ranlet said it’s important to trust your instinct, and if Campbell did not trust his, these kittens would have not survived. She also gave tips of advice on how to spot a neglected animal.
“If you get a strange gut feeling about a situation, that a pet is maybe neglected or abandoned, if there is no sign of food or water, no sign of shelter, if they’re visibly sick or injured, if they’re outside all the time, looking out for hot and inclement weather, it may be worth making a call to intervene to make sure that pet is being cared for and be the advocate for them,” Ranlet said.
Care First Animal Hospital is matching every dollar up to $100,000 donated to the SPCA of Wake County until July 31.
