According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old who escaped from a group home broke into a nearby house, took guns from inside and shot at deputies.
The body camera video shows deputies surrounding the home and dodging shots coming from inside the house. Eventually, helicopter video captures an exchange of gunfire. Shots being fired at deputies can be seen as they returned fire.
The 14-year-old was hit and rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. She was later transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando and was listed in stable condition Wednesday, police said.
The owner of the home that was broken into, AJ Bedizel, said that he lives there with his three daughters and feels lucky they were out at Publix when all the activity occurred. His home is now riddled with bullet holes and he is considering moving.
The incident began Tuesday night, when deputies were on patrol in search of a 14-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy who were reported missing from Florida United Methodist Children’s Home. A passerby on a nearby trail told deputies they had heard glass breaking at a nearby home, Chitwood said. Deputies tracked down the homeowner, who told them no one was supposed to be at the house and that there were weapons and a large amount of ammunition inside. Deputies headed to the home to respond and then spent several hours dodging gunfire, Chitwood said. After several hours, deputies fired back, Chitwood said.
No injuries to deputies were reported.
“I don’t know where we get the men and women to respond to these incidents to do what they do and do it with bravery and with courage and trying to protect the sanctity of human life, but they took rounds — multiple, multiple rounds — before they were left with no other choice but to return fire," Chitwood said.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the homeowners make repairs to their home and furniture that were damaged during the shootout.
