It’s a busy four lane road, with a speed limit of 40 miles per hour, many drivers use Seminola Boulevard as a fast way to get through Casselberry.
Melissa Canuelas lives nearby.
“Things happen on that street all the time. It’s always like ambulance and cop cars,” Canuelas said.
But just after 6 p.m. on December 10, the emergency vehicles she heard this time directly impacted her. It was for her 17-year-old son, Dominic.
“I just ran down the street. All I saw was his bike off to the side,” Canuelas said.
Dominic was riding his bike home from a nearby park. A car hit him while he was crossing Seminola Boulevard.
“Everybody was just like, ‘You don’t want to go over there,” Canuelas said.
Dominic was rushed to the trauma unit in Sanford. He suffered a concussion, a broken hip in two places, and severe road rash.
And the driver who did this might never be caught — they didn’t stop.
“You left my baby there… you left my baby there for dead. For dead,” Canuelas said.
We reached out to police to get any updated information about the investigation, and are waiting to hear back.
Canuelas says it appears they’ve hit a dead end.
We have no leads. We have nothing,” she said.
A 2018 AAA study found a hit and run crash happens every minute in the U.S. and the number is increasing. AAA found Florida in the top three for deadly incidents.
Melissa and her friends are taking the search upon themselves - canvassing the neighborhood with flyers this weekend.
“Somebody knows something. I feel like if everybody in Casselberry just comes together… we could give my baby justice. He deserves that,” Canuelas said.
Melissa says because of a code on a broken headlight at the scene, investigators do know it was a 2008 to 2012 Ford Escape or Mazda SUV.
