UPDATE:

Bradenton Beach Police have identified the man who died Wednesday night after being electrocuted inside his Bradenton Beach as long time island resident 65-year-old Mark Mixon.

Mixon had been fixing up a home on Bay Drive N.

Police say he and a friend were moving sandbags to the back of the house facing the bay.

As rough weather continued to roll in around 5:30 Wednesday night, Rob Nelson heard someone yelling for help.

Nelson and some friends were renting a house for a wedding two houses down the street.

“I came back out and was told that somebody had been electrocuted over there,” Nelson said.

Mixon’s friend was trying to pull him out and help, but it was too late.

“He was able to crawl away from them to get out of harm’s way himself, but at that point he couldn’t do anything to help him,” Nelson said.

With water so high and power still on, police had to wait.

“We could see the gentleman laying. It’s a laundry storage area right behind me, part of the house,” Bradenton Beach Police Department Det. Sgt. Lenard Diaz said.

Once inside, it became clear what happened.

“When we moved the washer back to look at the back, we noticed it was still plugged in, and the connection to the dryer was at the bottom where there was standing water,” Diaz explained.

Neighbors in this tight knit community have lived through dozens of storms, yet many say this still hits too close to home.

“It’s scary and just makes you realize how dangerous these storms can be. It’s really a shock and a surprise that something like this would happen the way that it did. You know that house was flooded…the poor guy just walked in and that was it,” Rose Vincent said.

Police also say a firefighter was hurt while trying to help, but is doing fine.
