The roundabout isn't the only new addition to Kelley Square. Follow it and you'll find the Worcester Public Market.
There are more than two dozen different vendors representing countries from all over the world.
Worcester Public Market founder and president Allen Fletcher said, “We've got George’s Middle Eastern Deli where you can get hummus to go. Sabrosa Venezuela is Venezuelan pastries and [more]. The whole market pantry is the shop up there which is just fancy groceries, mostly locally sourced."
Fletcher says there is something for everyone. At one end of the market you can have a beer at Wachusett Brew Yard, and then walk to the opposite end and buy locally sourced produce.
Soon after the market opened in February it was forced to close due to COVID-19. Fletcher says they're happy to be back open and are taking all of the proper protocols to keep visitors safe.
Fletcher said, “We have two floor managers on duty at all times and they will be wiping your tables as soon as you leave. The tables are socially spaced and we enforce the mask policies. We have picnic tables outside on Green Street and Harding St. and people can take their food out there so if they feel like they prefer to be outdoors in the open air, they can do that."
While COVID-19 may have slowed down business in the beginning, the market is located next to Polar Park due to open next April. Fletcher says the Canal District will be a destination for Worcester Red Sox fans.
Fletcher said, "When the ballpark comes and the virus goes, it will be a Golden Age.”
