“Cautiously optimistic. They want to open up, but they want to protect their congregations,” said Alan Harris, emergency manager for Seminole County.
“Being with one another, that really is what the church is all about,” said Craig Beall, executive pastor for Central Sanford church.
Baell said the pews have sat empty for a few months and it’s been difficult. Like many faith-based organizations, worship for his members has turned to the web.
“We had to stay connected somehow and that was a priority to us,” said Beall.
But now, he’s busy getting ready to open his doors again and he says it’s going to look different.
“We’re trying to take as many precautions as possible,” said Beall.
For starters, now volunteers will seat members, making sure they’re keeping distance from others. The church holds 600 people, but with distancing, they’re cutting that number in half.
The church is also disinfecting after each service and encouraging members to wear masks.
Harris said the county is encouraging faith leaders to take all the necessary safety precautions.
“Some churches say it’s still going to be another couple months before we feel comfortable opening. A couple are talking about even opening up this weekend,” said Harris.
Beall said he’s opening up the first Sunday in June.
They’re adding another service because of limiting the number of members in the church at one time and will continue to live stream the service for those who don’t want to attend in person.
“You don’t have to be here on June 7th, or even the month of June. See how things are going, but come back when you’re comfortable,” said Beall.
