TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed the franchise tag on Shaquil Barrett.

The team announced the move Monday morning before the deadline later in the afternoon.

Barrett led the NFL in sacks in 2019 with 19.5 in his first season with the Bucs. The 19.5 sacks was a single-season franchise record for the Bucs.

Barrett signed a one-year, $4 million deal with Bucs last year. The franchise tag will guarantee him at least $16 million in 2020.

The franchise tag means Barrett is allowed to negotiate with other teams, but the Tampa Bay team has the right to match any contract he is offered.

If Barrett signs with another team and the offer is not matched, that team must send two first-round picks to the Bucs.

The tag also does not prohibit Barrett and the Bucs from working on a long-term deal.

Barrett made the NFC Pro Bowl team following the season and earned second-team All-Pro honors.
