MALABAR, Fla. — Another sandhill crane was hit and killed by a vehicle Thursday morning as officials mull a request to make the town safer for the birds.

Officials said the bird was killed on Malabar Road near Eva Lane.

The driver did not stop — which is what happened a couple of weeks ago just down the street when a pair of sandhill cranes were struck and killed in front of their baby.

A local man went before the town council Monday night and made the case to better protect the birds. The vote was 4-0 to look into a resolution to make Malabar a sandhill crane "sanctuary city."

The move would impose possible fines or community service to people who hurt the birds.
