ORLANDO, Fla. — A parking garage seems to be a strange place to see art. But the Thornton Park garage is practically a gallery for local artists.

The Thornton Park Central Garage off North Eola Drive, across from Lake Eola, now features about a dozen large murals on the first floor.

Lisa Cuatt, president of Thornton Park District said the murals originally started as a way to bring attention to the garage and make it fun.

When the Orchid Medical Group bought the building, it allowed the district to continue the project, and only asked that orchids be added to the murals.

The pieces are all on the first floor, but the district hopes to add art to the subsequent floors.

All of the artists are locally-based, and the project was paid for by the district through fundraising efforts.

Thornton Park District has a free monthly art walk, and constantly looks for a way to showcase local artists. Find the latest events on the Thornton Park website.
