LAKE MARY, Fla. -- A Lake Mary school principal and teachers got pies smashed in their faces as part of an effort to help out a teacher in the fight of her life.
- Students, teachers raise money for teacher battling cancer
- Teachers who collected the most money got a pie in the face
- Students exceeded their fundraising goal of $2,500
Teachers and students at Markham Woods Middle School raised money for a teacher who’s getting treatment for stage-four breast cancer.
Teachers collected donations, and the ones with the most money got the honor of getting pied.
"It brings you a sense of joy and calmness, that I do have the support that I’m not alone in this fight - and that if at any time I needed someone from the school they would be there in a heartbeat," said Jenni Meriwether, an 8th grade science teacher.
The students exceeded their fundraising goal, raising about $2,500 for items to make Meriwether more comfortable during her cancer treatment.
"We’re trying to figure out who we are and I think seeing someone who’s becoming a very big part of our life – our teacher because school is such a big part of our life - I think it really hits us and we all wanted to try and help her," 8th grader Liam Degnan said.
Degnan made and sold hundreds of pink ribbons as part of the fundraising efforts.
