In her resignation letter, Kathy Mitchell said she had taken on the job with a promise that it would be for up to 3 to 4 months. But it was no almost 6 months since she took the job, with no indication that a replacement was coming.
"I firmly believe the university would be better served by my returning to University Audit," Mitchell said in her letter.
Mitchell says the school should hire a new long-term interim CFO, to be in place until after the school's new president is named, so that he or she can pick their own cabinet.
Mitchell's resignation takes effect March 1.
Mitchell took over after former CFO Bill Merck stemmed down amid an investigation into the misuse of funds at UCF. Merck is accused of willfully covering up that the school used general funds in 2014 to pay for construction of Trevor Colbourn Hall, rather than funds meant for facilities. The school apparently misused funds for other projects as well.
At least four employees have been fired in the course of the investigation. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the time, Marcos Marchena, resigned from the board last week, as did newly-installed president Dale Whittaker.
The Florida Legislature is investigating the school.
