The Friends of Deltona Library will celebrate its 50th anniversary this August, and members are asking for the community’s help in collecting memories.
“We are going to be celebrating our 50th anniversary, we were founded in August of 1969, and we don’t really have any memories from then,” said Christy Jefferson, President of the Friends of Deltona Library.
The volunteer organization has lost track of records because of deaths and relocations over the years. Jefferson said the library was also closed for 18 months and had little storage space, which contributed to the loss.
“We are hoping that out there in the community is someone that remembers the first library, when it was in the little red school house, or maybe when it was over on Providence in the fire house,” Jefferson said. “Maybe someone grew up there, their parents are gone, but they always went to the library, and we would just like to see if we can’t find some of our history and celebrate it.”
Jefferson said they have not decided how they will use and display the memories they gather just yet — it all depends on how many they get.
