DELTONA, Fla. — If you travel near Deltona during your commute, a depression, deemed a "potential sinkhole" by the Florida Department of Transportation, is the root of some traffic trouble along Saxon Boulevard.

The potential sinkhole was discovered about a week and a half ago, along Saxon Boulevard near I-4 in Volusia County.
"They found that there’s a phenomenon, probably 60 to 80 feet below the surface where the soils are loose. So the question is, is it a sinkhole? We don’t know, it could be the start of one,” said Steve Olson from FDOT.
"To be on the safe side, we wanted to move the traffic off of that," siad Olson. "We just don’t want cars going over it. You know chances of it actually the road collapsing, it's probably slim, but you just don’t know what’s going on down there between 60 and 80 feet."
Brian Cowing, the assistant manager of Expert Car Care, located right in front of the potential sinkhole, says this is hurting business.
"I’m sure people try and turn in here, and they can’t get in here, and they just end up taking off and going up the road," said Cowing.
He says many of his customers complain about trying to get in and out of their lot with all the cones and barrels in the street.
"It's hard to get out because it's just a steady line of traffic," said Cowing. "And it's hard to get in because no one wants to let you in.”
FDOT says there is no timetable on when the potential sinkhole will be fixed. It needs to be filled with a concrete mix before they open the lane.
"Right now people go by, they look at it, and they well they are not doing much work. But we are trying to do some prep stuff behind the scenes so we can come in there and be pretty efficient, fix that and then open up the road again," said Olson.
The FDOT is currently in negotiations with the contractor working on the interchange project just up the road. FDOT hopes to hire them to fix the issue as soon as possible.
