The fire has burned more than 200 acres near New Smyrna Beach. Florida Highway Patrol says visibility was compromised on the portion of the roadway from mile markers 249 through 257, which is from State Road 44 to Dunlawton Avenue.
The Florida Forest Service said the fire was 90 percent contained.
However, of course, the smoke that is being generated is the big problem. The main part of the fire continues to burn a couple miles from the Sugar Mill subdivision, but no homes have been evacuated.
Fire crews have been doing burnouts to cut down the amount of fuel the ravenous fire needs to keep burning. It is an effort firefighters learned was necessary from previous fires.
"Had a wildfire that came through in 2006 all the down trees from the fire, every time they got ahead of the fire they got caught up in a snag the fire would progress a little bit," said Julie Allen of the Florida Forest Service.
