ORLANDO, Fla. — Potholes on I-4 have been popping up more frequent then drivers would like.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, two of the main causes for potholes on the interstate is aging infrastructure and rain.

“Water can get in to these cracks and then get to the underlying layers that would then loosen the support layers. (From) there it would then make the pavement come down and create a pothole,” said FDOT spokesperson Jessica Ottaviano.

However, here is something you may not know: If you are driving your vehicle on I-4, and it is damaged because of a pothole in a work zone, you can go on to the I-4 Ultimate website and start a claim process.

“When a project is under construction, the contractor has the responsibility of the corridor at that time, because they are under construction. You can still send it to FDOT, it’s just that FDOT, if it’s under construction may seek it to the contractor to get the evaluation through them,” Ottaviano said.

FDOT also says, if you see something, say something. Since 2015, only 22 drivers have wrote in a report of a pothole through the FDOT website.

Twelve happened this year alone compared to just 10 from 2015-2017.

To report an issue to FDOT, you can submit the issue through their online form.
