It's sometimes hard to know which road you are driving on these days in Sanford.
- One Sanford road has three names
- Sanford is expanding its RiverWalk
- Officials ask drivers be patient with road signage changes
Take David Houle, the owner of Sanford’s D2 Cycling Center, for example.
"Am I on Monroe Road, am I on 17/92? County Road 15? It kinda goes by a couple different names now," he said.
Houle's business lies off a road which has three names: Monroe Road, County Road 15 and now—after an agreement between the City of Sanford, Seminole County, and FDOT—US-17/92.
Houle says the road is suited for heavier traffic.
"Monroe Road, being a newer road, is two lanes in both directions plus a middle turn lane. It can accommodate a lot of traffic."
Here are the main differences you can expect.
Previously, US-17/92 extended north of State Road 46 and then hugged Lake Monroe all the way to Interstate 4. Now, US-17/92 makes up part of what was State Road 46 west of the intersection to Monroe Road and then all the way north to I-4.
The re-designation will help assist Sanford complete phase 3 of its $23 million RiverWalk project which includes a 2.4 mile trail.
"You know the extension with the county and with Volusia County specifically, you'll be able to ride all the way around the lake front and come back,” Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett said. “It's huge now economically for people to be able to get to downtown Sanford via bike or walking."
One of the more important things that the transferring does is allow Sanford to reduce the speed limit of the road that runs parallel to the RiverWalk.
"You know it's really a safety factor to take it down from 45 to 35," Triplett said.
The city has advised drivers to be patient with both the signage and their GPS devices as it could take some time to show up on GPS mapping and directions.
