MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Florida First Lady Ann Scott visited some Melbourne school kids Wednesday as part of her annual Summer Literacy Adventure.

She read books to twenty K-4th graders at Ascension Catholic School during their summer camp.

The goal is to get students to read as many books as they can over their vacation to improve literacy skills.

Scott is visiting as many schools around the state as she can.

The First Lady made an impression on the group.

“I think it was pretty great and special that she came to our school,” said Zane Vilardebo, an Ascension Catholic School fifth-grader. “Reading is important because it helps you get a good education and get a good job.”

The Florida Department of Education says children who do not continue to read over the summer can lose a month or more of progress made during the school year.
