Known nationally as "Dr. G," Dr. Jan Garavaglia is arguably one of the country's most famous medical examiners.
Garavaglia said goodbye to Central Florida on Thursday at her retirement luncheon.
Garavaglia was the chief medical examiner for Orange and Osceola counties. Over her time in Central Florida, Garavaglia and her examinations have been key parts in some of the most known investigations, including the Caylee Anthony case.
Garavaglia was also important in several projects. She worked hard to create Florida's first "green" energy-efficient morgue, which is located in Central Florida. She also received national certification for the efforts by the employees at the Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office.
Garavaglia said she has met every goal she had during her 10-year stint. She also hosted the hit TV show, "Dr. G: Medical Examiner."
"She's always made sure that her show was on the cutting edge," said State Attorney Jeff Ashton, of the Ninth Judicial Circuit that includes Orange and Osceola counties.
Despite the recognition, Ashton said Garavaglia maintained her credibility.
"It's always great to know that no matter how much national attention, we know that we can put a medical examiner up on the stand that is confident and competent," he said.
Garavaglia added: "We've educated millions of people about how to take better care of yourself and different things."
Garavaglia said the goodbye is "bittersweet."
"It's hard to believe," she said. "I love Orlando, I love Orange County, I love this place. But, you know, I made that decision."
