Wisconsin health officials said the person who tested positive had recently traveled to China. They were treated at a University of Wisconsin hospital, but they didn't say which one. The person was one of 10 people who were being tested; results on others have not come back yet.
The person who tested positive is being isolated at home until they asymptomatic, health officials said.
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a video demonstrating the coronavirus at U.S. airports.
Health officials said the video was shot to explain new travel restrictions that were put in place this week. The video follows a fictional passenger through the process as though she were arriving to the U.S. from China.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an emergency authorization to develop a test for the Wuhan coronavirus strain. That means qualified labs can use the test developed by the CDC.
The test uses nasal or oral swabs to detect the virus, but it is not 100 percent accurate. A negative result does not necessarily mean there is no infection.
The CDC has had almost 300 patients under investigation for the virus as of Wednesday. There have been 12 confirmed cases across the country in the states of Washington, California, Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin.
In Japan, a Carnival Japan cruise ship was being held off the coast of Yokohama, near Tokyo, after it returned from a multi-country voyage with at least 10 people who later tested positive for coronavirus. One of the stops was Hong Kong.
The people who were infected were led by gloved and masked officials Wednesday off the ship, while the rest of the 3,700 people on board faced a two-week quarantine in their cabins. Japan's Kyodo news service reported that one of the 10 people who tested positive was American.
In Hong Kong, another cruise ship with more than 3,600 people aboard were to be screened after it was banned by Taiwan.
The coronavirus, which first emerged in Wuhan, China, has killed almost 500 people, mostly in mainland China, but it has also spread panic and anger around the world as the cases grow.
