Today's Big Stories
1. Meta faces historic antitrust trial that could force it to break off Instagram, WhatsApp
Meta Platforms Inc. faces a historic antitrust trial beginning Monday that could force the tech giant to break off from Instagram and WhatsApp, startups it bought more than a decade ago that have since grown into social media powerhouses.
The looming antitrust trial will be the first big test of President Donald Trump's Federal Trade Commission's ability to challenge Big Tech. The lawsuit was filed against Meta — then called Facebook — in 2020, during Trump's first term.
2. Nvidia says it's started U.S. production of AI chips as Trump promises semiconductor tariffs
As the Trump administration readies tariffs on semiconductor imports, chipmaker Nvidia said Monday it has started production on factories in Phoenix, Arizona and Texas.
Over the next four years, the maker of advanced chips said it plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in bolstering U.S. supply chains for the semiconductors and supercomputers that run artificial intelligence programs.
3. All-female crew returns from Blue Origin’s New Shepard suborbital launch
Six women — including a former NASA rocket scientist, a bioastronautics research scientist, journalist Gayle King and music superstar Katy Perry — became astronauts after taking flight on a Blue Origin New Shepard launch on Monday morning.
They traveled beyond the Kármán line, the internationally established edge of space, at 62 miles/100 kilometers.
While the entire trip only lasted about 11 minutes from liftoff to touchdown, this all-female crew made history becoming the first team of its kind in more than 60 years.
4. Ex-LSU receiver Kyren Lacy died in an apparent suicide during a police chase, authorities say
Former LSU receiver Kyren Lacy has died at age 24 in an apparent suicide in his car while being pursued by authorities in Houston, according to a Harris County sheriff's report released Sunday.
Lacy already was facing criminal charges stemming from a fatal car accident in Louisiana last December, which had clouded his NFL prospects.
