Rain and freezing rain will continue through the overnight hours through much of the mountains and northern Piedmont near the Virginia state line. The northern mountains, Boone zone, Ashe, Avery and Burke Counties may receive rain. Freezing rain will continue through the overnight hours. Light icing may develop on elevated surfaces in and north of the I-40 zone.
The northern mountains, Boone zone, Ashe, Avery and other counties may receive upwards of a half-inch of ice on tree limbs, power lines and elevated surfaces. Some power outages are also possible.
Freezing rain should be done by mid-morning Wednesday. Another round of moderate to heavy rain, at times, will move through later Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
For the rest of the state, a cold rain continues through Thursday with a break in the action for Friday, then rain returns for the weekend.

3. Person shot by police during traffic stop in south Charlotte
The shooting happened about 2 a.m. along the 7000 block of South Boulevard. At least one officer fired a shot, police said, hitting the person. A firearm belonging to the person was recovered at the scene, according to authorities.
