STUDIO CITY, Calif. – What do the songs “Despacito,” “Caught Up” and “Where are u now?” all have in common?

They all contain lyrics written by producer and songwriter, Jason Boyd, affectionately known, as Poo Bear.

Constantly creating legendary hits at his Black Star Music studio, Poo Bear’s journey to success began with some difficult hurdles.

“It’s crazy because, you know, just coming from being homeless with my mom and my brother when I was 8-9, I would always hear this little voice that would say like, one day you’re gonna be OK,” he shared.

OK he is. Poo Bear is Justin Bieber’s main songwriter. He produces too, recently hitting number one on the Billboards R+B Producers chart. With no formal training, Poo Bear wrote his first hit at the age of 15. He says Stevie Wonder sparked a bit of his own creative wonder.

“I didn’t come from a music family at all. So I kind of feel like I just had the desire to want to make music that resonated with people the same way  Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” resonated with me.

And its now his music that resonates and reaches countless listeners around the world. Poo Bear is not a typical writer. You won’t see him with his journal and pen. It’s a simple mic, through which Poo Bear creates his globally renowned melodies and inspiring lyrics. 

“Using this mic, the SM7, instead of writing, I’m like, you know what, why would I write down what I just though of when I can just record it? You know I could literally skip this process, save an hour maybe in time. Then I look up, and I’m able to get two or three songs done in a day,” he explained.

And that frequency has paid of. Showing off his many iconic, award winning records, he says he enjoys creating lyrical concepts that carry meaning. That includes music of his own that he had been performing on tour with country artist Zac Brown.

All this, while celebrating the success of his latest hit with Justin Bieber, entitled “Intentions.”

“It’s crazy watching the "Intentions" video, I didn’t know what the actual treatment was. So, when I first saw the video in Paris, I cried for like an hour because it just hit home so much. Because you know, Justin’s intentions and going and helping people that are less fortunate. It really hit home And I cried for a long time,  just being grateful and appreciative- knowing where we come from,” he expressed.

Humble roots. Authentic lyrics.

And a genuine soul. That just might be the honey that reflects the true sweetness of Poo Bear.
