Maria Serrano is a multimedia journalist covering the Metro Orlando area, including the 9th Judicial Circuit Court in Orange and Osceola Counties. As a journalist, Maria is a problem solver who calls herself a detective with a new case to crack every day. She was born in Colombia, and her career has taken her to Texas, Michigan, and Florida.
Maria’s first language is Spanish, but she’s taken on the challenge of pursuing a career in an English-speaking market. Prior to graduating from Florida International University in Miami, Maria interned at WSVN and The New York Times. Less than a month after her college graduation, she became a news reporter for ABC7 Amarillo in Texas. Two years later, she accepted a job offer in the Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids area. She survived the Michigan snow and covered countless breaking news stories, including one on a man who opened fire at a Michigan beach town’s pier, murdering two people. That tragic coverage earned Maria a Michigan Association of Broadcasters award.
After four years of pursuing a career away from home, Maria joined Spectrum News 13 in Orlando in March 2023.
Maria’s favorite aspects of her work include covering jury trials, going to court, and highlighting the Hispanic community. In her free time, she loves reading Colleen Hoover novels, playing the piano, and writing music.
