Katherine Kerr teaches at Discovery Intermediate School in Kissimmee and says it's those magical moments that make all the difference.
She says, "They know they have that safe space in my class."
Kerr teaches 8th graders pre-algebra.
"We're always working in partners or groups, or kids are moving around the room. I have students that will sit on the floor and work," she describes the atmosphere in her class.
Her math lessons are always relatable like how to save for a down payment for a car. Kerr says, "It's really fun to watch that learning happen. They're like, ‘Oh, things cost money!"
Kerr told Spectrum News 13 that she didn't originally choose teaching as a career but when she was younger an experience sparked her interest. She adds, "I used to swim, so one year I was coaching a swim team and I had the best time coaching these 8 year olds. And I realized I loved helping these kids."
She especially likes to help students when they're struggling.
Kerr says, "My biggest opportunity is keeping these students engaged when a lot of them have just checked out in math. It’s, 'I wasn't good at it in elementary school, I won't be good at it now or I can't worry about school because someone in my family just passed away. I just lost my house.'"
Kerr is committed to making sure no student slips through the cracks.
"So I really try to keep those relationships at the forefront, make sure I'm engaged in my students’ lives. They're just so sweet, they're great students. They're great, great, great people. And I'm just very lucky I get to be in their lives," she says.
