OVIEDO, Fla. — Hagerty wrestler Nik Blake knows how to win on the mat.

"He is a physical wrestler who just imposes his will and is kind of fearless and gets after it," coach Scotty Diaz said.

He has won district and regional titles but has not yet brought home a state championship. The junior is looking to change that this year.

What You Need To Know

  • Hagerty wrestler Nik Blake is working hard to win a state championship this year

  • The junior already has won district and region titles

  • Blake finished just 2 points shy of a state championship last year

  • Coach Scotty Diaz said Blake is on track to break multiple Hagerty records

"I just like winning, I just like going out there and win," Blake said.

He came close to that state title last year, finishing second, and is using that for motivation for this year.

"Just knowing that I lost by 2 points last year, it just sucks," Blake said. "So this year I don’t want that to happen."

Added Diaz, "We absolutely think he can do that this year and next year."

Blake for the past 12 years has put a lot of sweat and hard work into the sport. It takes a lot of dedication to be successful.

"I just have to put probably most of your time into it to practice, lifting, eating, everything," Blake said.

That work ethic gives Blake a chance to be an all-time great at Hagerty. But his confidence and preparation give him the edge.

"I think I can hang with anybody, so practice and just go out there and just wrestle," Blake said.

Diaz said Blake is on pace to break all the school's records.

"He’s on pace to break the wins record and the pins record for career and probably the team points record," Diaz said. "He’s on pace to be the top guy."
