ORLANDO, Fla. — It's a new season, and not much has changed with the Orlando Magic. They said they believe that's good.

Magic players and coaches said Monday at media day that they believe continuity and familiarity on the roster will give them a leg up on other teams in the NBA's Eastern Conference that made a lot of offseason changes.

What You Need To Know

  • The Magic on Monday held media day ahead of the upcoming NBA season

  • The players and coach Jamahl Mosley say they believe continuity will be a strength for them

  • They also added two players with NBA title experience — guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cory Joseph

  • Orlando opens training camp Tuesday and plays its first preseason game on Oct. 7, in New Orleans

"We're a very together group, and that's one of the advantages we know we have," Magic All-Star forward Paolo Banchero said. "We're really together, and we can really depend on each other. So, in those moments of doubt, when other teams may be looking at each other sideways, I think we come together even more."

In the offseason, the Magic mostly re-signed their own players. Forward Franz Wagner signed a maximum five-year extension that will be worth at least $224 million, the largest contract they have ever committed to a single player; and forward Jonathan Isaac, a defensive stalwart when healthy, inked a five-year, $84 million extension.

Backup centers Moe Wagner and Goga Bitadze, and guard Gary Harris also signed multiyear deals.

"Guys know what's expected of them. They know what our standard is, and they recognize what our standard is each and every single day and every night we play,” Coach Jamahl Mosley said. “It's easier to do because you're not having to reintroduce it."

The two veteran players they added have NBA championship experience. Guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has won titles with the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers. His defensive play will add to the Magic’s key strength, and his career 36.9% 3-point shooting will open up space in the team’s offense.

"Just coming in and doing my job. You know, what I bring to the table and just add to what they already have going on,” Caldwell Pope said. “Just being more of that leader and keep guys in the right head space."

Guard Cory Joseph, who got one title with the San Antonio Spurs and played for another, is expected to help replace the playmaking the Magic lost when guard Markelle Fultz and forward Joe Ingles were not re-signed in the offseason.

"There are certain expectations people are putting on us this year, and that we got to be prepared for,” Joseph said. “We're not going to surprise anybody, but we got to embrace that and build on that."

The only other new player on the roster is forward Tristan da Silva, the No. 18 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. And he is not a typical rookie, coming in at 23 years old and showing in Summer League that he has the shooting and overall skills that will help him contribute right away.

Mosley said he’s really excited about the versatility of the Magic this season, and he said he believes they can solve any problem thrown their way.

Training camp begins Tuesday, and the Magic's first preseason game is on Oct. 7, in New Orleans against the Pelicans.
