LOS ANGELES — The Lakers will resume play in the NBA Summer League Monday night against the Boston Celtics in Las Vegas after losing 99-80 to the Houston Rockets in their opener with Bronny James scoring 8 points on 3- for-14 shooting.

James, a second-round choice in last month's draft and oldest son of LeBron James, missed all 8 of his 3-point shots, made both his free throws, grabbed five rebounds, had two steals and three turnovers in 26 minutes, 46 seconds of play in the 40-minute game Friday.

The 6-foot-2-inch guard made a layup and dunk, missed a layup and 2 three-point shots and made 2 free throws in the opening 5:47, scoring 6 points, then was on the bench for the remainder of the quarter.

James missed eight of his nine shots over the final three quarters. The Lakers were outscored by 9 while James was on the court at Thomas & Mack Center.

"I'm just going to the film and I'm looking at things that I always do," James said. "There's things that I should focus on and make sure I'm going over and stuff like that. Yeah, just always focusing on playing as hard as I can on the defensive end and whatever open looks I get on the offensive end, take it."

James played his first game as a Laker last Saturday, scoring four points in 21:43 in a 108-94 loss to the Sacramento Kings' team in the California Classic in San Francisco.

James missed Sunday's 92-68 loss to the Golden State Warriors due to some trace swelling in his left knee, then scored three points in Wednesday's 80-76 loss to the Miami Heat's summer league team as the Lakers concluded play in the California Classic.

"I thought the last game of the Cali Classic defensively, he was terrific," Lakers coach JJ Redick said during the ESPN broadcast of Friday's game. "We want him pressuring the ball. There's a conditioning element to being able to play that way defensively. But overall, we like what we've seen in practice. We like what we've seen in the summer league."

First-round draft choice Dalton Knecht led three Lakers in double figures Friday with 25 points, while guard Tommy Kuhse added 11 and center Colin Castleton 10.

Kuhse played with the NBA G League's Austin Spurs in the 2022-23 season and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg of the German Basketball Bundesliga in the 2023-24 season. Castleton averaged 1.5 points in 16 games for the Lakers in the 2023-24 season.

Guard Reed Sheppard, the third player chosen in the 2024 draft, led four Rockets in double figures with 23 points, making 9 of 17 shots, including 4 of 6 3-point shots. Cam Whitmore added 20 on 8-for-17 shooting. The 6-foot-7- inch swingman averaged 12.3 points per game in 47 games with the Rockets in the 2023-24 season after being chosen with the 20th selection in the 2023 draft out of Villanova.
